United Kingdom Review of Gambling Act to affect Club Sponsorship

The United Kingdom ministers have decided to review the Gambling Act of 2005. Such a move seems that it could have a significant effect on the revenues from sponsorship in the English Premier League. Many football clubs have the sponsorship of betting firms such as William Hill and Bet365.

Gambling Act Review Might Affect Football Club Sponsorship

It seems that many calls for responsible gambling are starting to affect the industry. According to reports, amongst the many different changes that the UK is considering is a blanket ban on shirt sponsorship by wagering companies. It would cover the entire sport in the United Kingdom. Reports also state that this is not a sure thing yet. It also indicated that less extreme amendments might take place. For example, brands that want to appear on the shirt as a part of their club sponsorship would have to demonstrate the commitment they have towards promoting responsible gambling. It comes after the Gambling Commission announced the upcoming ban on the usage of all credit cards in gambling across the United Kingdom.

The effect of the New Possible Ban on the industry

The new restrictions, if applied, could have a drastic impact and can present a challenge for the Football clubs in the Premier League. So far, ten English Premier League teams have shirt sponsorship with betting companies. The list includes West Ham (with Betway), and Everton with SportPesa. Also, the naming right to the league itself belongs to Sky Bet. It is a part of a deal that will expire in 2024. Many clubs depend on the revenue from these sponsorship to operate.

Recently, the spotlight was on the issue by Derby County. It happened after they signed the former England Captain, Wayne Rooney. Everyone in the industry knows that such a deal was funded heavily due to the agreement between the club and 32Red. On the other hand, the industry experts are skeptical that a comprehensive ban on shirt sponsorship will ever take place. The experts believe that the government and the clubs know the importance of revenue from gambling and club sponsorship.
